Safety advice
What to do when your car breaks down?
A breakdown always comes as a surprise. These six steps will help you stay as safe as possible by the roadside — until we arrive.
Move to a safe location
If possible, drive to the hard shoulder, a car park, or a quiet side road. Park your vehicle straight, not at an angle across the lane.
Switch on your hazard lights immediately
Do this as soon as you notice something is wrong — even while still moving. This warns other road users in time.
Put on a high-visibility vest
Required in the Netherlands whenever you exit your vehicle on a public road. Usually found in the glove box or boot.
Place a warning triangle
On regular roads: approximately 30 metres behind your vehicle. On motorways, do not place a triangle — it is too dangerous. Stay behind the crash barrier instead.
Exit via the passenger side
Never step out on the traffic side. Walk directly to the crash barrier or behind it. Ask passengers to exit the same way.
